“I know strength training is a good idea, but where do I start? What do I do, and how do I know if I’m doing it correctly?”
These are typical questions a beginner is faced with, and the fitness industry does not do a good job of making it any easier for you. Commercial gyms with rows of odd-looking machines, fitness classes with catchy names that provide a lot of fatigue with no results, and the internet filled with fads, gimmicks, and flat-out lies can make anyone confused and dejected.

As a GN Strength & Conditioning client, you will receive a customized training program designed to get you the results you are after. For each session, you will be coached in a private or semi-private setting, with expert instruction on how to perform each exercise correctly.  Clients from all walks of life have had success through this personalized approach. Teenagers, senior citizens, male and female, as well as beginners who have never trained before – have all been amazed at what they accomplish.

Not local? No worries. I offer online coaching programs that will take you to the next level, no matter where you are.

    Greg Napolitan

    Strength & Nutrition Coach

Hi there, I’m Coach Greg, and I’m glad you found me! I’ve been a Personal Trainer since 2014, and in 2018 I opened GN Strength & Conditioning in Portage, Mi.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time working with all walks of life, including teenagers, middle-aged folks, men and women – all with different goals, issues and physical abilities.
Ever since I first touched a weight at 8 yrs old (with my dad), I’ve been driven by physical pursuits. From multiple HS sports, to the rigors of the Marine Corps, a short career competing in amateur Muay Thai and finally settling into Strength and Nutrition coaching – there’s no doubt that my view of the world and my view of myself has been shaped by physical effort. Even now, at 50 yrs old, you will find me spending my free time training, studying about training and nutrition, or training my two teenage kids – and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
    Why get strong?
Strength is the foundation for all physical attributes.  Speed, coordination, agility, power and yes, even endurance are enhanced with an increase in strength.  Aerobic capacity has also shown to improve in the initial stages of a novice strength program.  Improved balance and increased bone density in the aging population  is making strength training ever more popular with that group, and anecdotal evidence from people of all ages show a reduction in nagging back pain (a strong back is a healthy back).

Why is a barbell training program the best way to get strong?

The human body functions as a complete system, and your training should reflect that.  Barbell exercises mimic real-life movement patterns that forces the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments and nerves to coordinate in a unified manner, and that when the goal is strength improvement, commercial gym machines and gimmicky exercise fads that isolate only certain muscles or odd movement patterns, cannot provide.  Strength gains from barbell training are immediately transferrable to any other physical endeavor you will experience.

Dave lost a whopping 50 lbs working with me! He wanted to get in shape for the Philmont Boy Scout hike with his son, but he knew this 50-mile hike would take preparation and hard work. Being driven by a desire to make his son proud, to enjoy several days together pushing each other, and just to be a proud father figure to his son, allowed Dave to stay consistent and work hard even when he was tired or "off" that day. His goal was rooted in a deeper purpose and is the key to success - as it pushes us forward even when our bodies don't want to cooperate with our plan.  "To lose a few pounds for the summer" is an ok goal, but it typically lacks the deeper meaning to keep us going when things get tough. (My training for Dave included strength training, conditioning, and nutrition coaching).
