Youth Strength Training / Sports Performance for Young Athletes
As young athletes grow, they naturally spend most of their time learning the technical skills of their sport. Just as important is developing the strength, movement, coordination, and body control that help those skills translate into confident performance—both now and as training becomes more advanced.
Practicing a sport alone often isn't enough to fully develop the physical abilities needed to perform at your best.
Sports practices develop skills. Foundations develops the physical abilities that help those skills translate into performance.
Foundations develops the physical abilities young athletes need to improve performance today while preparing them for the greater demands of advanced training tomorrow.
Through coach-guided strength, movement, coordination, and body control training, young athletes build the physical abilities and confidence needed to move well, train safely, and continue developing as the demands of their sport increase.
Foundations is designed to introduce young athletes to structured physical development in a way that builds confidence, encourages consistency, and creates a positive relationship with training from the very beginning.
Every athlete begins with an Athlete Discovery Session so Coach Greg can understand how they learn, move, and respond to coaching before training begins.
Training takes place in small groups of five or fewer, allowing every athlete to receive individual attention while still enjoying the encouragement of training alongside others. One coach-led session each week provides the right balance of progress, recovery, and consistency while helping young athletes develop a positive relationship with training that lasts for years.
Simple exercises and movement challenges reinforce what was learned during the week and encourage continued progress between sessions.
Every decision in Foundations is guided by a simple philosophy: coach the individual, progress with purpose, build meaningful relationships, and prepare young athletes not only for today's training, but for tomorrow's opportunities. These principles shape every athlete's experience from their very first session.
Every athlete develops differently. Coaching is adapted to the individual so each athlete receives the right level of challenge and support throughout their development.
Every training decision has a purpose. Rather than rushing athletes toward more advanced exercises, progress is earned through consistent improvement and mastery of the fundamentals.
Great coaching starts with understanding the athlete. By learning each athlete's personality, temperament, and motivations, coaching becomes more personal, communication becomes more effective, and athletes are more likely to stay engaged and continue progressing.
Today's coaching decisions shape tomorrow's opportunities. Every stage of Foundations prepares athletes for the greater physical demands they'll encounter as they continue to grow, develop, and pursue higher levels of training.
Every athlete follows the same goal—develop the physical abilities that support long-term athletic success—but no two athletes follow the exact same path. Training is individualized, progress is intentional, and every athlete develops at a pace that matches their current abilities and readiness.
Every training session is built around the athlete, not a one-size-fits-all workout. Depending on the athlete's current abilities, sessions may include bodyweight exercises, movement drills, resistance bands, speed and footwork drills, jumping, sled work, and eventually strength training.
As athletes become proficient with each movement, they progress to more challenging variations. Progress may be measured by improved movement quality, increased repetitions, faster times, or demonstrating the body control and technique needed to safely advance to the next stage of training.
Foundations athletes don't suddenly become "ready" for the Athlete Development Program—they gradually develop into it. As more advanced training methods are introduced and mastered, their training naturally begins to resemble that of more advanced athletes. When that time comes, Coach Greg will discuss the next step with both the athlete and their parents.
As a high school Strength & Conditioning Coach, I saw the same challenge year after year. Many young athletes were eager to train, but they hadn't yet developed the physical abilities needed to safely and confidently handle more advanced training.
Foundations was created to help fill that gap. By focusing on strength, movement, coordination, and body control during the early stages of physical development, young athletes build the foundation needed to continue progressing for years to come.
My goal isn't simply to coach workouts—it's to help every athlete become more physically capable while creating a positive relationship with training that lasts well beyond a single season.

The boys loved Greg and the insight he provided to improve their technique. He put together a great program to prepare them for wrestling, and the results were outstanding.

Foundations is designed for young athletes who are ready to begin structured physical development, regardless of their current ability level or sports experience. Whether your child is trying a sport for the first time, enjoys playing recreationally, or is already competing at a high level, Foundations helps them build the physical abilities that support long-term athletic success.
Most athletes in Foundations are between the ages of 10 and 14, but placement is based on an athlete's stage of physical development rather than age alone.
For young athletes in the early stages of physical development, one coach-led session each week provides the right balance of learning, progress, and recovery without becoming overwhelming. It also helps athletes develop a consistent training habit while leaving plenty of time to enjoy their sport and other activities.
To reinforce what is learned during each session, athletes are given simple take-home challenges that help strengthen movement patterns and encourage continued development throughout the week.
The Athlete Discovery Session is an opportunity for your child to experience GN Strength before making a commitment. During the session, they'll be guided through a small selection of movements, drills, and exercises that allow Coach Greg to observe how they move, learn, respond to coaching, and approach physical challenges. This helps determine the best starting point and coaching approach for your child's individual needs.
The session is relaxed, encouraging, and designed to help both the athlete and their parents experience what coaching at GN Strength is like. Just as importantly, it's an opportunity for everyone to decide if Foundations is the right fit.
Small groups allow every athlete to receive the individual attention needed for technique instruction and problem solving. With five or fewer athletes, Coach Greg can adjust exercises, provide immediate feedback, and adapt coaching to each athlete's abilities and progress throughout the session.
Just as importantly, a smaller group creates an environment where every athlete is known, encouraged, and never feels like they're simply moving through a large class.
No. Foundations is based on physical development, not sport experience. Whether your child is trying a sport for the first time or has already been competing for years, training begins at their current stage of physical development. Every athlete receives coaching and progressions appropriate for their individual abilities, allowing beginners and experienced athletes to train together while continuing to improve.
Life happens, and occasional schedule conflicts are expected. Whenever possible, athletes will be invited to attend another available Foundations session that week. If a make-up session isn't possible, Coach Greg will provide an appropriate at-home workout or movement plan so your athlete can continue progressing.
The same commitment applies if Coach Greg ever has to cancel a session. Every effort will be made to reschedule, or an alternate training option will be provided so your athlete doesn't miss out on meaningful progress.
