One day, just like that, it was over. 24 hrs earlier I belonged to arguably the finest fighting force in the world. A fighting force that demanded extreme discipline, peak physical fitness, unflinching loyalty to each other, and a healthy contempt for the outside world that seemed to value excuses over all else to stay comfortable. After 4 amazing years I said goodbye to that and entered a strange new world.
Then I did what a successful civilian should do. I worked full time while getting my bachelor’s degree, then I got my MBA. I then went on to work for 2 Fortune 100 companies over the next 25 years. I received great pay, kudos from my friends and family, and married my amazing wife during this time. But somehow, I didn’t feel good about myself.
I lost muscle, I gained fat, I got winded going up a flight of stairs, I ate whatever was in front of me, I slept in late on the weekends, my “amazing” job was sucking the life out of me, and I was never able to re-create the brotherly community of like-minded guys I once had. Essentially, everything that the Marines had instilled in me, was gone.
“Unacceptable.” I thought. Then I recalled one of the more important lessons in my Marine Corps training, which was that by forcing your body to do what it doesn’t want to do, not only will you become unbelievably fit, but you will also develop a mental and emotional strength you didn’t know you had. So that’s where I started and haven’t looked back.
My 12-year renewed fitness journey has shown me that what I had in the Marines was not gone, I just had to WAKE IT UP. My relentless journey has taken me to the Muay Thai ring, then to becoming a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, to finally finding my new MISSION by opening my own coaching gym, and now helping Veterans and other purpose-driven people find their fighting spirit through fitness and nutrition coaching.
Let's take this journey together!
